Initial qualification and exemptions
You usually need Driver CPC to drive an HGV professionally. Initial qualification and periodic training are different routes: a new driver should follow the official getting-qualified guidance, rather than assume a renewal course grants the initial qualification.
Exemptions depend on the vehicle’s use and your circumstances. Check the official exemption guidance before relying on one; having a platform account does not establish an exemption. Northern Ireland has its own training process, linked in the sources.
Periodic training: plan the five-year cycle
Qualified drivers must normally complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Check your own deadline and recorded hours through the official service, then use approved courses that count towards the entitlement you need.
Course format matters. National and International courses have different requirements; confirm duration, e-learning allowances and approval with the official guidance and provider before paying. Keep completion records and allow time for the training record to update.
National or International Driver CPC?
For professional driving in the UK and Europe, the official guidance requires 35 hours of International Driver CPC training. Including National courses leads to National Driver CPC, which supports UK-only professional driving. Do not assume a mixture of courses provides International entitlement.
Check the current rules before choosing courses, especially if your intended work changes. International hours used to obtain a National card cannot simply be reused to obtain an International card. Follow the official service’s instructions for your record.
Your DQC and official training record
The Driver Qualification Card (DQC) records your Driver CPC qualification. Carry the card when required for professional driving, check its validity and use the official replacement service if it is lost, stolen or damaged. Check the relevant rules for older cards and National or International status.
Use GOV.UK to check recorded training hours; HOULVEK does not query or validate the DVSA training register for you. If a course is missing, check the service’s processing guidance and contact the provider rather than relying only on a certificate.
Renewal and returning after expiry
Before expiry, plan the required training against your existing deadline. After expiry, do not assume booking a course restores permission to drive professionally: use the official requalifying route and check your driving licence and medical validity too.
A Return to Driving CPC route exists for eligible drivers, with conditions on expiry, training and where you can drive. It is not a universal seven-hour renewal. Check your exact dates and complete the required follow-up training before relying on that route.
Before professional driving
- Check your driving category, licence and medical validity.
- Confirm whether Driver CPC applies or an evidenced exemption exists.
- Check the DQC expiry and National or International entitlement.
- Reconcile completed courses with the official hours record.
- Plan training and keep the required card and records available.
Driver CPC is not Transport Manager CPC
Transport Manager CPC concerns the professional competence of a transport manager. It is distinct from the driver qualification described here. Operator licensing and transport management are covered in the Operator Licence guide.
